St.Kitts –Nevis Chevening Alumni encourages nationals to apply for Chevening Scholarship

    Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 8, 2014 - The members of the recently formed St.Kitts-Nevis Chevening Alumni group, is calling on nationals of the Federation, who possess a desire to pursue a Masters degree in the United Kingdom, and are willing to return to the Federation, to aid in nation building, to apply for the prestigious United Kingdom Chevening Scholarship for future leaders.

     

    Leader of the SKN Chevening Alumni, Ms.Sonia Boddie in her remarks expressed that “being a recipient of this highly coveted scholarship, is an absolutely amazing, life changing and unforgettable experience. You  not only get the opportunity to receive a world class education, whilst pursuing your postgraduate studies, but you are able to study in a truly international community, thus expanding your knowledge base and your network. Ms. Boddie, further added, that studying in the UK, had broadened her perspective on life for the better. She remarked, “having observed the amount of charity work done by young people in the UK, I returned home with a burning desire to work with the youth in our Federation, to inspire and empower them, and that is what I am currently doing.”

    Ms.Boddie also praised the members of the alumni, for their continued support to nationals over the years, with preparations to apply for the scholarship, which has resulted in St.Kitts and Nevis, producing some of the best candidates over the last five years. She highlighted that, “on a recent trip to Barbados to participate in the British Chevening Scholarship 30th anniversary gala, St.Kitts and Nevis was lauded by the British High Commissioner to the OECS and Barbados, Ms. Victoria Dean, for having produced successful  candidates consecutively from 2010-2014. This year is particularly historic for us as a nation, as we have two awardees, both hailing from the island of Nevis, in the persons of Ms. Kurlyn Merchant and Ms.Kimberley Evelyn.”

    Boddie emphasized that the alumni group was recently established to further promote the scholarship, to foster a closer bond with scholars and for past scholars to collectively give back to the country. She noted the group is made up of outstanding leaders from various walks of life, who are providing leadership in both the private and public sector, with one member even currently serving as a Junior Minister in the Nevis Island Administration Cabinet. She stated that the group is still in the planning stages of their community development activities, but their main focus right now is to encourage nationals to apply for the scholarship and provide assistance to them, so that St.Kitts and Nevis can continue its winning streak in 2015 and beyond, and others can have an equally wonderful experience studying in the United Kingdom.
