BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE individual has been formally charged in connection with the murder of Shante Claxton.

Information reaching this publication is that Reece Walters of Cotton Ground was charged yesterday (Sept. 14) with “murder” and “attempted unlawful carnal knowledge”.

Claxton – said to be in her early teenage years – was discovered dead, reportedly by one of her relatives on the afternoon of September 6, 2014. She was found in or near the St. Thomas’ Primary School’s bathroom.

Information which was gathered by this media house suggests that she left her home for church earlier that day and when she did not return within a specific time, her relatives began looking for her. And that search led to her remains being found.

SKNVibes understands that since the incident occurred, three individuals were picked up by the police on Nevis and were said to be assisting with their investigations. One was subsequently released and this media house is not certain about whether or not the third individual was released.

Walters remains in police custody and he is expected to be remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

UPDATE: A Police Press press release issued this afternoon indicated that Walters admitted "to meeting the deceased with the intention of having a sexual encounter; he made no further comments once officially charged". It further explained that a post-mortem will be conducted to determine Claxton's cause of death.

The Commissioner of Police "wishes to thank the citizens of Nevis who were incensed by this heinous act and provided information that lead to the identification of the suspect. Anyone having information of any unsolved crime within the Federation is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 of Whatsapp him at 869-662-2145".
