BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DEPUTY COMMISSIONER of POLICE (DCP) Stafford Liburd is confirming the death of one of the members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), Constable Avis Cannonier.

He said she died earlier today (Sept. 22) “at the Joseph N. France Hospital after prolonged illness”.

“On behalf of the Commissioner of Police and the Force, I extend sympathy to the families of the officer. In this time of grief we recognise that the Force too has lost a member.”

Commenting on her service in the RSCNPF, DCP Liburd explained that the Cannonier was stationed at the Basseterre Police Station and had recently completed a Regional Security System (RSS) training course where she excelled.

“She is a fairly new officer and her service was cut short due to illness. But what was noticeable about her was that she was recently on an RSS training and she was very well known for her strength and physical ability. She gained honours in the physical aspect of the training. She worked at the Basseterre Police Station, Beat and Patrol; also she had a brief stint at the Crime Scene Unit.”

Cannonier was enlisted in the RSCNPF in March, 2010, prior to which, she served for several years as a member of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force.

DCP Liburd said particulars of the funeral service for Constable Cannonier would be determined later. However, she would be “accorded full military honours”.

She would have celebrated her 33rd birthday next month.
