Press Release

September 25, 2014 - “You may not get your dream job today but you have to start from somewhere,” Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn told job seekers in Virgin Gorda earlier today.

Minister Walwyn was at the time giving remarks at the opening ceremony of the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Job Expo.  The session was held at the Catholic Community Centre.

“Don’t get embarrassed if someone sees you doing something that you think is not a good job. Once you are making honest money, working hard and have the right attitude, things will line up eventually for you,” he pointed out to the young people present.

The Minister He told job seekers that their employment search should not just be about money. “It cannot just be about looking for a job. If you are looking for a job just because you want money you are not going to do well.  If you’re looking for a job because you want to build your skills, make yourself a better person, make a contribution to an establishment and of course to your country, you will find success.”

Minister Walwyn said he was pleased to host the job fair in Virgin Gorda as a testament to Government’s commitment to assist the youth in finding meaningful employment. He also thanked employers for being good corporate citizens and partnering with the Ministry on this endeavor.

Director of the BVI Tourist Board Ms. Sharon Flax Mars in her remarks applauded the Minister for Education and Culture and his team for spearheading the initiative in Virgin Gorda.

“It speaks volumes about their commitment to the youth and to employment on our island,” she said.

Ms. Flax Mars continued, “The value of education extends beyond the walls of our classrooms.  Today, our young people need to be equipped with work experience that will prepare them for the ever changing market around the globe.”

She also invited job seekers to embrace every challenge that takes them outside their comfort zone. “It is important that you our people embrace every opportunity.  Every job opportunity provides a chance to embrace a new skill, technique, lesson and strength.”

Coordinator of the Youth Employment Services Mr. Albert Wheatley also delivered remarks.  The Virgin Gorda Job Expo was hosted in partnership with the Virgin Gorda business community and the Youth Employment Services.

The Youth Employment Services (YES) is Government’s commitment to assist young persons facing barriers to employment. In addition to pairing unemployed youth with job opportunities, YES provides instruction in resume writing and cover letter preparation.  It also conducts personality profiling sessions and teaches interviewing techniques

Participating business included RoseWood Little Dix Bay, Driftwood Resorts Nail Bay and SugarCane Restaurant, Leverick Bay Resort & Marina, Oil Nut Bay, Saba Rock Resort, Necker Island Resort and Coldwell Banker Real Estate. In addition, the public sector was represented by the Department of Human Resources and Labour.

The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to enhancing the quality of life of youth by ensuring they are provided with meaningful opportunities to chart their own destiny.
