Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 06, 2005): Minister responsible for agriculture Honourable Cedric Liburd is encouraging residents to return to the soil as one means of reducing poverty, creating jobs and promoting rural prosperity.
Going along with the theme of the Third Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Rural Life from which he recently returned, Minister Liburd noted that it is now up to each country to promote agriculture. He said that residents are being encouraged to view agriculture as a viable and potentially profitable profession and noted the direct link with tourism. The Agriculture Minister said that St. Kitts and Nevis has good soil and agricultural produce should not be brought in for tourists to consume.
The agriculture minister further added that there are several initiatives including school gardens that are in the planning stage. He said a collaborative effort would be worked out with education.
He also informed that another proposal is to encourage the growing of various fruit so that when guests stay at the hotels they can be provided a breakfast fruit plate of local produce. He said that assistance is currently being sought to support this possible initiative.
