NIP condemns “hangers-on” statement by Premier Amory

Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-Nevis (15-10-2014): The Leadership of the National Integrity Party has condemned a statement made by the Hon. Vance Amory, Premier of Nevis, in which he described government employees, who were perceived to be supporters of the Nevis Reformation Party and whose jobs were terminated by his administration, as “hangers-on”.

The statement by Premier Amory is very unfortunate, ill-advised, and unbecoming of a party and its leadership that promised Nevisians that there would be no victimization if elected to govern Nevis.”

To refer to Nevisian citizens as “hangers-on” is a betrayal of the trust that Nevisians placed in him and an infringement of their constitutional right to be treated fairly and justly regardless of their political affiliation.

No Nevisian deserves to be treated as second class citizens in their own land.

It is quite clear that the CCM-led NIA is experiencing great difficulty in justifying the wanton victimization of scores of government workers who are perceived to be supporters of the Nevis Reformation Party. It is also quite sad that Premier Amory would turn a blind eye to the important contribution that those workers were making to the development of Nevis and to the upkeep of their families.

Today, many of those workers are out of a job and cannot feed their families. The children have to listen to Premier Amory calling their parents “hangers-on”; parents, who, in many instances, are qualified professionals.

We hope that Premier Amory would retract the statement and apologize to those workers and their families for his derogatory remarks.
We also call on all right-thinking citizens to denounce the statement made by Premier Amory.
