Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 07, 2005): St. Kitts and Nevis continues with its preparations to host the 5th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) which will take place October 3 to 8, 2005.
Minister responsible for agriculture, Honourable Cedric Liburd said that at the Third Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Rural Life, held in Ecuador from August 29 to September 02, 2005, there was also a sub-meeting for the Ministers of Agriculture of the Caribbean.

At this sub-meeting chaired by reelected Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) Dr. Chelston Braithwaite, country representatives discussed agricultural concerns specific to the Caribbean region.

Minister Liburd took the opportunity to update participants on the most recent plans for the Caribbean Week of Agriculture.

The agriculture minister further mentioned that various products and methods would be showcased at the exhibition and regional trade show while specific themes would display groupings of persons who work in agriculture.  In particular the contribution of women and youth to agriculture would be shown.

The local Tenth Annual Department of Agriculture Open Day had been rescheduled in order to coincide and collaborate with the exhibition and trade show which will run from October 6 to 8 at the Fort Thomas Hotel.

The CWA will commence with two simultaneous three-day workshops; relating specifically to agro-tourism and youth policy.  The agriculture week will also feature an Alliance for Sustainable Development of Agriculture in the Rural Milieu meeting scheduled for October 5 to 7.

The Alliance is comprised of IICA, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Caribbean Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The CWA is being hosted by the St. Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Alliance.
