Monday, October 27, 2014 -Three Virgin Islands students from the Elmore Stoutt High School have achieved top places in the region in the 2014 CXC Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CSEC).

Kerian Arianna Penn and Christal Nicolette Forbes placed third and seventh respectively in the subject of Theatre Arts while Makayla Bria Maduro, secured the top position in the region for Electrical and Electronic Technology.  Ms. Maduro is also the valedictorian of the Elmore Stoutt High School Class of 2014.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Wawlyn said the diligence of the students, the dedication of teachers and the motivation of the parents have paid off.

“I am indeed pleased with our students’ ability to excel in this regional examination which is a testament to our capabilities as a Territory.  On behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands, I congratulate the students, their families and their teachers on this achievement and wish them much success moving forward,” Minister Walwyn said.

Acting Chief Education Officer Mrs. Jillian Douglas Phillip also congratulated the students on their stellar accomplishment.

“The Department of Education is extremely excited about the achievements of our students who have placed in the top 10 positions in the regional CXC CSEC examinations. We are proud of our students and congratulate them, their parents and teachers for a job well done,” the Acting Chief Education Officer said.

Mrs. Douglas Philip continued, “We know that we can vie for top places regionally and have proven such time and time again.  Indeed, we stand head and shoulders with other Caribbean countries.”

This not the first time the Virgin Islands has secured top placement in the regional examinations. Last year, Elmore Stoutt High School Student Keana Kedisa Laing placed 8th in the region in the subject of Theatre Arts.

The Ministry of Education and Culture applauds and recognizes the accomplishment of all stakeholders in education as it journeys to create a Culture of Excellence.
