Basseterre, St.Kitts (TUCOM):- “In our Nation we have paid much lip service to security. We have agonized and we have postured. But what truly has been done? I say to you tonight, that Team Unity has set the safety and security of our people and our country as its highest priority. Our people must feel safe in their homes. Our children must be safe at school and in their playgrounds and indeed in their communities. Our business people must feel safe in their places of business. Our bus drivers must feel safe as they ply their trade around the country. Equally too, patients and health workers must never again endure the terror of gunshots flying in our hospitals. Safety and security should not be a privilege. It should be a right enjoyed by each and every Kittitian and Nevisian and every resident here.” This was the sentiment expressed by Team UNITY Leader Dr.Timothy Harris in an address to the Nation which was first aired on Monday evening at 8:30pm on local radio stations.
In the address Harris lamented the recent upsurge in crime as well as the ongoing health issue at the federation’s largest educational institution the Basseterre High School where the school has been at a virtual standstill with Teachers, Staff and Students staging ongoing protest action to bring attention to the serious health concerns at the school which they attribute to the school environment which they label as toxic. He gave his team UNITY’s full support for the BHS Staff, Teachers and Students.
Harris declared “Team UNITY stands full square with those who are standing for a better St. Kitts and Nevis. We stand with the teachers, students and parents at Basseterre High School because it is the right thing to do. If indeed our children are our future then let us not abandon them now. We cannot call on our teachers to mold young minds but yet abandon them and their students at the Basseterre High School.
The general public has come to accept that the BHS environment is very toxic and unsafe as a learning and teaching environment. Teachers, and students have over the last two years of bungling and arrogance by the Douglas regime, been suffering from debilitating headaches, rashes, respiratory problems , dizziness and other ailments. There is real suffering at the school. The government abuse of the teachers has made the suffering more traumatic for parents, teachers and students alike. Team Unity's leader and former Minister of Education Dr the hon Timothy Harris empathized with the parents, teachers and students of the BHS and pledged Team Unity's fullest support to the school.
As part of it’s historic PROSPERITY AGENDA Team UNITY has proposed the relocation and construction of a brand new state of the Art Modern High School that will replace the over 50 year old BHS .
