     Top local winners in the FCCA essay competition received cash awards from the Ministry of Tourism earlier today, Monday November 10, 2014. The brief but significant presentation took place at the Department of Information, NTV8. 

     

    Fourteen year old Rol-j Williams, student of the Gingerland Secondary School and first place winner in the Senior division of the 2014 Florida Caribbean Cruise Association’s (FCCA) essay Competition, and 12 year old Junique Pinney who was a student of the St. Thomas’s Primary School but has since graduated to the Charlestown Secondary School received their cheques from Tourism officer Dorson ottley.
     
    “Rol-J, on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association I present to you this check of US$200 for your effort in the senior category of essay competition. Congratulations.”
     
    “Junique,  on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and the FCCA I extend congratulate to you for your victory in the junior category of the essay competition.  Congratulations.”
     
    The Tourism officer acknowledges that all schools across Nevis and the wider Caribbean are exposed to the opportunity to participate in the competition.  He emphasized that the Ministry of Tourism ensures that Nevis participates annually and records the gratitude of the Ministry to all students who participated this year.  
     
    In its endeavour to augment tourism awareness among children and that they be part of the industry, participants discussed “Why is it important for cruise passengers to come to our destination.”
     
    All primary and secondary school students were invited to participate and entries were judged in two categories; a junior division for children ages 12 and under and a senior division for children 13 – 16.  Essays were assessed on content, creativity, style and grammar.
