Taste Foxy’s soca-flavoured 'Addictive Whine'

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HER realisation that there is just no ‘whine’ like the authentic Kittitian whine was the inspiration for this year’s Soca Monarch contender Foxy, whose ‘Addictive Whine’ is said to be one of the top pieces for the annual event.

Born Kavana Periera, Foxy is originally of Halfway Tree but resides at Market Street, Basseterre.

No stranger to performing before large audiences, the local Soca stage has been graced with Foxy’s presence since 2003. She had performed during Carnival “on d’ road” events with the Grand Masters Band, was one of the vocalists with the One Love Band and has participated in the Female Calypso Bacchanal.

She last produced a song in 2011 with intentions of participating in the Soca Competition but had to forego it after discovering she was pregnant.

“So this year is my come-back year,” she declared.

“I was in Anguilla when I was pregnant and I looked at their Carnival and realised that nobody could whine like a Kittitian; so the song is about that. There is a whine signature to Kittitians and the concept is this Kittitian whine is so addictive that it is like wine, and too much wine can get you drunk.”

Addictive Whine is Foxy’s Groovy Soca contender and for the Power segment she will be belting out one dubbed ‘Road Jam’.

“Last year I didn’t attend anything for Carnival, so when I heard all of the bands and everything I felt so left out. So I decided that this year I would be involved in all the road activities. I am not missing out on anything! That is what the song is about,” Foxy said.

She told SKNVibes that both pieces were produced by her significant other, Mervin Maynard.

Foxy was asked if she believes she would be successful during the Sugar Mas 43 Soca Monarch Competition, to which she confidently stated that she has some measure of confidence.

“For one, something I always have is stage personality and that carries you a long way and the ability to own your song. The fact that I write my songs, I felt I would be able to own and perform them to the fullest. I think there is a possibility for me to win the Groovy. Not sure about the power because I’m a little bit rusty, but I am confident.”

The 33-year-old mother of two said she passionately loves Soca, and although her family life, fulltime attendance of college in pursuit of an Associate’s Degree in Business Management and part-time employment with Best Buy Supermarket keeps her relatively busy, she always finds time to dabble in the art form.
