BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – VETERAN calypsonian Rock-A-Fella has asserted that he could easily advance to the final round of the Sugar Mas 43 Calypso Monarch Competition, but the conditions for him to do so must be right.
Rock made the declaration while being interviewed by this publication. And when asked what the right conditions for his advancement were, without hesitation he informed that the judges must be of a specific political party.
“I have been getting good response from the tents. I might be King this year…I hope to advance to the Semi-Finals and the Finals. While they don’t have any Unity judges and any PAM judges and any CCM judges, I will go through.”
When asked if he was suggesting that with Labour judges he would make it through to the Finals, Rock indicated that “I may stand a chance of going through because Labour judges are fair”.
One of Rock’s two songs focusses on the political scenario within the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis.
“There are lots of things happening in this country when it comes to politics. To see what is going on in Nevis and what is going on in St. Kitts after the two guys left the Labour Party, dropped out the plane, forgot to pull their parachute and then dropped into PAM’s yard. And they went up to Nevis, brought Mark Brantley down here and tried to form a group called Unity. If you notice, it is not working for any of them, so I decided to sing a song about it.
“They have been members for 17 years and the other for 25 years and then all of a sudden the party isn’t any good? It is not sending a good message to the public.”
The Sugar Mas 42 Calypso King is Richie Buntin and, although Rock says he would like to win the Sugar Mas 43 Calypso Crown, he did express his wish that Buntin retains his crown.
