BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - VETERAN calypsonian Devon ‘Lord Kut’ Liburd has sent out a challenge to other calypsonians to become more creative in an effort to revive the art form.
In a recent interview with SKNVibes, the veteran of 40 years blasted his fellow calypsonians for the lack of creativity.
“I like to be different…I like to study the other calypsonians. I know what all of them going to sing. I pray the calypsonians do their homework. I am going to be frank; I love this art form too much to don’t speak the truth. They need to go do their homework and they need to be creative. They are not creative; every year is the same story.”
He also stated that every year he is being disappointed when he hears the calypsos he has to work hard to keep the tents alive.
“I get disappointed because they make me work so hard in the tents to keep calypso alive. You could listen and see that all in August they did not have a song, because of what they are singing. That is why I organise this place called the High Dinning Entertainment Centre so that they could come and practice to sing.
“The calypsonians here have to be plenty creative in order for the art form to live on.”
Lord Kut also slammed that judges, claiming that they do not know what they are doing.
“The judges ain’t really know what they are doing, because they judge in a kind of way…and sometimes they leave me out. Now, why would leave a good calypso out of a competition?”
Lord Kut has released two songs for Sugar Mas’ 43; one paying tribute to former steel pan player Cyril ‘Puntan’ Webster and the other a thought provoking track entitled MONC.
