Under the auspices of the National Association of Administrative Professionals (NAAP), the 6th Annual Imelda Wilkin/NAAP Effective Speaking Competition for secondary schools was staged in the last week of November.  This year, the participating schools were defending champions Gingerland Secondary School, Saddlers Secondary School, Verchilds High School and Washington Archibald High School.  However, with just four (4) schools competing, the Old Girls’ School hall buzzed with excitement as the competitors displayed their elocution skills by presenting on the topic: “The legalization of marijuana would prove to be more beneficial economically and otherwise that harmful to the Federation of St Kitts-Nevis.”

BASSETERRE St. Kitts December 3rd, 2014   --  All the students performed well as they delivered excellent arguments for and against the legalization of marijuana.  Additionally, their insightful presentations inspired a great debate from the audience as the judges deliberated.  When all was said and done, the adjudicators declared Rol-J Williams of Gingerland Secondary School the overall winner of the competition.

For the first time in the competition’s history, there was a lone female - Washington Archibald High School’s Oxsanna Parris – who copped second place.  Rol-J Williams was adjudged the winner in the Prepared Speech category, while Oxsanna Parris won the Impromptu segment.  The other two competitors were Khale Thomas from Verchilds High and Nigel Langley from Saddlers Secondary.  The judging panel was made up of Ivor Phillip and June James with Orville Leader performing the Time-Keeper’s role.

For his outstanding efforts, Mr Williams received a smart phone with $100 credit compliments DIGICEL, along with cash prizes and other gifts.  As the winning school, Gingerland Secondary received NAAP’s rotating trophy plus $1000 compliments the Eastern Caribbean Home Mortgage Bank (ECHMB), which has provided this prize for several years.  The other participants received cash prizes compliments Brisbane O’Garro Alvaranga, and excellent gifts with LIME pitching in lovely gift bags and $50 vouchers for every contestant.

NAAP takes this opportunity to place on record its highest commendations and deepest gratitude to the teachers who work untiringly year after year to prepare their students for this competition.  We know that without the cooperation of these teachers, this competition could never be possible. Thank you TEACHERS!

This effective speaking competition which helps to hone the public speaking skills of high school students, is a fixture on NAAP’s annual calendar, and is made possible by the sterling contributions and outstanding assistance of several corporate and community partners.  As such the National Association of Administrative Professionals (NAAP) hereby expresses heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to the following for assisting with the successful staging of this year’s event:
