Basseterre, St.Kitts (TUCOM) -- Today, Wednesday December 17, 2014, TEAM UNITY signed the historic Charlestown Accord which outlines the mutual commitments and agreements of a Team Unity Government to the people of Nevis.
The document was signed by Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris on behalf of the People's Labour PARTY, Hon. Shawn K. Richards on behalf of the PEOPLE'S Action Movement and Premier Vance Amory on behalf of the Concerned Citizens Movement. These are the three political parties that form Team Unity, and is widely expected to form the next Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. He document was witnessed officially by Hon. Alexis Jeffers on behalf of CCM, Jonel Powell on behalf of PAM and Sam Condor on behalf of PLP.
The Accord formalized the COMMITMENTS of a Team UNITY government to the People of Nevis.
Team Unity believes that for too long, the people of Nevis have been an afterthought of the current Prime Minister and his administration. The Nevis Island Administration has been the recipient of attacks from the Federal Government. Nevisians rightly wanted to know how Team Unity will be different; the people are asking “Is this another alliance for convenience only? How will Nevisians benefit?”
Team Unity understands that, given the history, trust is a major issue in Nevis and that Nevisians want more than empty when not broken promises. Nevisians want Leadership at the Federal level to keep their word. Premier Vance Amory Leader of the CCM, Hon. Shawn K. Richards Leader of PAM and leader of PLP and Team UNITY the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris all agree that the Team Unity Prosperity Agenda must not only include Nevis, but must be about Nevis.
Team Unity understands and hope to convey by this morning’s ceremony, that this agreement, the Charlestown Accord, is more than words. It must be about actionable commitments of Team Unity to prosper all of the people of the Federation. This agreement is about trust, honesty, integrity, equity, and fairness. The old politics of division must die so a new politics of inclusion exemplified by Team Unity can live. The old politics of intimidation and fear must die so a new politics of reconciliation and prosperity can live.
The goal of this agreement is to guide the process of healing between the people of St. Kitts and of Nevis; and ensure that all the people of the Federation are permitted to equitably enjoy the full benefits of their citizenship and to access any and all resources of the Nation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Leader of Team UNITY Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris stated in his presentation,” We must understand that it’s time to chart a new course, a new age of thinking where we once rejected our colonial ancestry through gaining independence; and now we must build on our ancestral legacy and responsibility by providing prosperity for all.”
Leader of the People’s Action Movement Hon. Shawn K. Richards stated at the historic signing , “We make this pledge to Nevis today that it is not enough for some of us to prosper; we all must prosper. It is not enough for some of us to benefit from our country’s resources, we all must benefit. It is not enough for some of us to plan, but the plan must include all of us. Both Islands.”
“Now is the time to reassess our priorities as we prepare our nation for a new age.People of Nevis, this is your moment in time. The federation is ready for reform, the federation is ready for real unity. Unity of conviction, unity of purpose, unity of action,” Richards continued.
The Charlestown Accord is a prelude to the even monumental unveiling; that being the MOU that gave birth to Team UNITY, which will be unveiled and re-signed publically early in the New Year. The MOU will encompass the Charlestown Accord in addition to the overall commitment and pledge of a Team UNITY government to the people of the entire Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
