Thursday, December 18, 2014 - The Department of Waste Management is inviting the public to take advantage of its wood chipper, a motor-driven machine used to recycle non-processed wood, like tree trunks and barks, reducing it to smaller woodchips called mulch.
According to Waste Officer Mr. Marquese Maduro, mulch is usually spread over the surface of the soil as a covering. Persons can use it in landscaping and beautification of their surroundings. It is ideal for retaining moisture in the soil. Additionally, it helps to prevent soil erosion and serves as a nutrient for plants.
“Instead of importing mulch we can use what we naturally have,” Mr. Maduro said adding, “Persons who like the red and mahogany looking colours can use a dye to colour the mulch and chemicals can be obtained to treat it and prevent decomposition.”
Mr. Maduro explained that the objective of this initiative is to get more persons in the community to take advantage of the wood chipper, which is currently being utilised mostly by the Department of Agriculture and the Botanic Gardens.
He is encouraging the public to get on board and take advantage of this free service and play a part in protecting the environment.
Persons interested in this initiative can contact officers at the incinerator at 468-9484. Persons also have an option of bringing their materials for chipping or mulch can be provided upon request.
