BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 14TH 2005
St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas is among world leaders assembling at United Nations Headquarters in New York Wednesday for the 2005 World Summit, expected to be the largest such gathering ever held.
Prime Minister Douglas, who left here Tuesday afternoon, as he completed a visit of the Federal Cabinet to High Schools on St. Kitts, as part of the 22nd Anniversary celebrations, was greeted by United Nations Secretary General, His Excellency Dr. Kofi Annan on his arrival Wednesday morning at UN Headquarters.

Mr. Annan also welcomed each arriving President, Head of Government, or senior minister as they entered the huge UN complex on New Yorks East River, shaking hands with each leader. A line of UN security guards saluted as each leader walked past.

The Summit opened with a minute of silent prayer and meditation followed by statements from Mr. Annan and United States President George W. Bush as leader of the host nation.

During its three days of meetings the Summit is expected to approve an outcome document dealing with development, a Peacebuilding Commission, a new Human Rights Council, terrorism and the establishment of a democracy fund.

Although it does not contain every proposal Mr. Annan requested, he has called it a good document with which he can work and build on.
