Police Boys Club Leader refutes abuse claim

Christopher Roberts - father of the boy who was allegedly abused by a member of the Police Boys Club
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Leader of the Police Boys Club has categorically denied rumours that a member of the organisation’s leadership team abused one or more members of the club.

Last week Tuesday (Mar. 17) on the Prime Minister’s weekly radio programme, “Ask the PM”, a caller spoke of a situation where a teenager was flogged with a piece of electrical wire by one of the officers of the Police Boys Club.

Since then, SKNVibes was approached by the youngster’s father, Christopher Roberts, who said his son reported to him sometime ago that “two or three other guys” and his son were flogged with electrical wire on their buttocks.

Roberts, when asked by this media house if he observed any marks on his child’s body which suggested he may have been beaten, replied in the negative.

The seemingly concerned father expressed that he has no problem with corporal punishment, once it is administered “the right way”.

“I don’t have a problem with corporal punishment in the right way; not with any electric wire.  I prefer if a belt is used.”

The alleged actions by the officer, Roberts explained, equates to nothing less than “abuse”.

SKNVibes spoke with Leader of the Police Boys Club, Sergeant Adolph Adams, about the allegations and he emphatically denied that the incident took place. He also stated that this is merely an attempt by Roberts to damage the reputation of the organisation.

“The report it completely false and he is trying to discredit the Police Boys Club.”

This morning (Mar 24), the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, addressed the issue and noted that, according to his investigations, the accusations are false.

“I want first to respond to a statement that this caller made last week on this programme. The caller made two serious accusations and allegations against the police. That the police that (are) presently pursuing the Police Boys Clubs (were) being accused of harsh punishment of members of that club, and he alluded to an incident where a young boy was beaten by a police officer with a piece of electric wire.

“I want to say to the country...and those listening that that is not true. That was a blatant lie that was put on the air by this caller. The mother for this child called me the very next morning and told me it was a lie; that I should not study with Reggie because it was part of a plot that was being pursued by the child’s father and Mr. Reginald Thomas...I also called the Commissioner of Police the same very afternoon..., asked the Commissioner of Police and the Police High Command to investigate this matter and they too told me there was no truth whatsoever in this matter.”
