Basseterre, St. Kitts – A number of men are currently in police custody following a bottle and stone-throwing this afternoon (Jan. 5) during the funeral procession of Kenya Francis-Mitcham.

A report reaching this publication stated that after completion of Mitcham’s Home-Going Service at the Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral Catholic Church on East Independence Square Street, the funeral procession was on its way to the Springfield Cemetery when bottles and stones were thrown at those in attendance.

The report further stated that the bottle and stone-throwing incident started when the procession was in the vicinity of the Potential Bar at the junction of Cayon Street and West Independence Square Street.

SKNVibes learned that the incident was purportedly initiated by members of a known gang outside of Basseterre and some young men in the funeral procession retaliated, which led to a section of the glass door at the entrance of Mac Pennies and broken bottles strewn on the roadway and sidewalks.

The incident occurred in proximity of the Basseterre Police Station, from which a number of officers responded immediately and apprehended a number of young men.

Following the incident, it was observed that a contingent of Police Officers had provided security to the procession as it continued on its journey to Mitcham’s final resting place.

The body of the 34-year-old man was discovered by officers of the Royal Anguilla Police Force in a residential apartment in South Hill, Anguilla at about 8:45 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2014.

Two men, one born in St. Kitts and the other in St. Maarten, both of whom are holders of Anguillan passports, have since been charged with his murder.

It was reported that Mitcham was shot to death in the presence of his girlfriend and his daughter shortly after arriving on the British overseas territory.
