St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas said Monday that the St. Kitts Marriott Resort has become a major engine of growth for the tourism sector.
Vowing to continue the transformation of the social, infrastructural and economic landscape of St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister Douglas recalled strong opposition from the People's Action Movement and other quarters to his St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party Government's decision to give the green light for the construction of the posh resort which is not only attracting visitors from around the world, but also has become the venue for several local, regional and international conferences.

"Against the whaling of the nay Sayers, the highly respected and capable Labour Party Government took the bold initiative to facilitate the establishment of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, an investment that exceeded over US$500 million," Prime Minister Douglas told the Nation in a radio and television address.

"We are grateful for the confidence that the owners of the Marriott hotel have reposed in us. Their investment is now beginning to bear fruit and has become a major engine; driving the economy of this our proud Federation," said Prime Minister Douglas in his message to mark 22nd Anniversary of Independence.

The hotel and casino employ close to 1800 people.
