BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PRIME MINISTER of St. Kitts-Nevis Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas has been reported to the US State Department for allegedly fraudulent statements regarding the graduating class of US President Barack Hussein Obama.
At a press conference held yesterday (Mar. 25) at the People’s Action Movement’s (PAM) Secretariat Office on Church Street, Political Leader of the party Lindsay Grant said that Douglas had blatantly lied about the PAM Leader graduating from the same Harvard Law School class as Obama.
“On Sunday night the behaviour of Denzil Douglas at one of his party’s political meetings left much to be desired and it is the type of politics we wish to get rid of. On Sunday, he told his supporters that he had gotten information from the State Department that I had not been in class or at school with President Obama,” Grant said.
The claims of Douglas making the mentioned statements were later verified after SKNVibes obtained a copy of the audio from the political rally, which was held near the constituency office in Central Basseterre.
“Baby Grant, when Obama run, he said that he went to school with Obama. They were in the same class,” PM Douglas said at the rally.
“Well, I asked the United States government to send me information pertaining to the graduating class of Obama. I have received a full photograph of every single graduate, with Obama circled for me by the United States government and up until now me ah look for baby Grant and me can’t find him,” he added.
Douglas further stated at the rally that the caption to the photograph did not contain Grant’s name.
“But that ain’t all you know, because maybe I miss him because he’s small, but I look at the legend of the photograph. Every single person in that photograph who was graduating with Obama, they name right there and me nah see none called Lindsay ‘Fitzy’ Grant up to now. Up to now me nah see nothing like that, but that is what Grant is.
“Grant is a liar! He is a fraud!” Douglas exclaimed to the crowd.
At the press conference, PAM distributed programmes from the June 6, 1991 Commencement Ceremony of the Harvard Law School held at Holmes Field. In the programme, Obama is listed as receiving his Juris Doctorate and Grant a Masters of Laws at the ceremony, seemingly indicating that both men had in fact attended the institution at the same time.
“It is an undisputed historical fact that I share the same alma mater as US President Barack Obama, and that we went to school at Harvard at the same time,” Grant stated.
In addition to discussing legal action against the Prime Minister with his attorneys, Grant said that he found it necessary to report Douglas’ remarks to the US State Department.
“He told his supporters that he had gotten information from the State Department that I had not been in class or at school with President Obama. In the first case, the State Department would not give out that type of information on a sitting President to a foreign government.
“Is Denzil Douglas saying that the US government breached their national security protocols? In fact I have today sent off a letter to the State Department with an audio tape and transcript indicating what the Prime Minister has said and enquiring of the breaches of protocol.”
The PAM Leader stated that he would not have mentioned the issue if he did not believe it was a concern for the nation at a time when serious issues such as crime and the economy should be discussed at political rallies.
“The record shows that we did graduate together in 1991. The question that I put to the people is this: if Denzil Douglas could tell such a blatant lie on such a factual situation, and on a simple matter, what else is he capable of lying to the public about?” Grant asked.
