Harris reproaches PM Douglas on death/wounding comment

The Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris (L) and Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – UNITY Leader Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris admits that this is the “silly season” but says a comment made by Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas late last week at a public meeting is irresponsible, discomforting and warrants an investigation.

The Prime Minister was at the time addressing a large crowd in his Constituency, Number Six, when he made a comment that spoke to death and wounding.

The comment has made its way across the worldwide web via emails and social media platforms, including Facebook and Youtube.

“The statement made by Dr. Douglas, which has now gone viral, is certainly very discomforting to many nationals at home and abroad, and it shows clearly that Dr. Douglas is a man on edge. He is, what people would popularly say, losing it! The pressure of this election is apparently too much for him and each time he opens his mouth he is taking the country, because of the nature of the comments, to an all-time low. And when we think that he could not descend to a lower depth, he continues to surprise us by going even lower.

“The remark about people being dead and wounded in haven taken Sandy Point is outrageous and it should be condemned by the business community. It should be condemned by the Christian Council, the Evangelical Association and all of civil society, but most importantly, it must be condemned by the media and every citizen and resident of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Harris suggested that by making the comment in question, Prime Minister Douglas is engaging in inciting.

“It is highly irresponsible for any national leader to be inciting supporters into criminal activity. And to do so with the gusto and passion and the high level of irresponsibility that the minority leader did in St. Paul’s is a reflection that his time in office must come to a rapid end.

“The good thing is that on February 16 citizens and residents have the opportunity to remove him from office so the country can settle down to a new level of stability and peace, good governance and disciplined behaviour on the part of the leadership.”

Dr. Harris said the nation is experiencing a leadership crisis at the hands of the Prime Minister, which is leading to societal instability.

“We can’t on one hand be encouraging and imploring young people in Mc Night, in St. Paul’s, elsewhere to, as it were, respect the law while the national leader, illegitimate though he may be, has become the exponent of lawlessness, law-breaking and disrespect for the Constitution. So we are having a leadership crisis at the highest end that is creating instability in the society.”

In addition to calling on various groups of society to condemn the comment made by the Prime Minister, Dr. Harris said he has publically called on the Commissioner of Police to launch an investigation into the situation and to take appropriate action.

“The National Leader must lead by example! And certainly the standard by which we judge our national leaders can’t be at the same level by which we judge others in society. Leadership bring with it special responsibility, onerous responsibilities at times, but also with it comes privileges and rights. And we believe at this time, in the silly season when passions generally are high, the remarks were inflammatory, incendiary and I have publically called upon the Commissioner of Police, CG Walwyn, to investigate those remarks and to take requisite action against Denzil Douglas.”
