BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 20TH 2005 - St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas said Monday he hopes to conclude a number of agreements during next week's State Visit to the Federation by President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) His Excellency Chen Shiu-bian.
"During that visit, I hope to conclude and confirm a series of agreements impacting several spheres of social and economic life in St. Kitts and Nevis and the region. These will include, but be not limited to, upgrade and expansion of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport," said Dr. Douglas in his 11th Independence Day Message, since his appointment as Prime Minister in July 1995.
Prime Minister Douglas said he expects the agreements will serve to initiate a number of other projects that will build on the very substantial involvement of the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the economic life of St. Kitts and Nevis.
"Their contribution in the past has included the funding various sporting complexes, multi functional community centres and hurricane shelters, scholarships, technical assistance in the agricultural and health sectors and the reconstruction of Port Zante," noted Prime Minister Douglas, who pointed out that the Government and people of Taiwan "have been good to St. Kitts and Nevis" and have proven themselves genuine friends in good times and in bad times.
Saying his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government is proud and honored to welcome President Chen Shiu-bian to St. Kitts and Nevis and to the region, Prime Minister Douglas said his Administration "will continue to expound upon and promote the entitlement of the Taiwanese people to a voice and indeed a presence in major international forums."
President Chen Shiu-bian will be in Basseterre on September 27th and 28th.
