BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER some difficulty, members of the Opposition have gotten their hands on the Voters’ Lists (both the old and new boundaries), but Unity Member Lindsay F. Grant has highlighted several discrepancies, which he said are part of a conspiracy by the incumbent to steal the General Elections.
Speaking with SKNVibes, Grant explained that earlier this week he had received the Voters’ Lists for his constituency, Number Four, and after perusing it he discovered a number of inaccuracies and changes.
Concerning the List created on the old boundaries, Grant explained that it “does not have on anybody who registered in 2014, which means that if you registered from January to December of 2014 you don’t appear on the List that we just got created on the old boundaries. That’s a problem, because those persons are eligible to vote but because the list created now doesn’t have them on it, it will be impossible for them to vote when they present themselves at the polling station”.
Regarding the List compiled in accordance with the new boundaries, Grant indicated that persons who were accustomed to voting at a particular polling station have been shifted to another. He said the difficulty that poses is, if these persons are not made aware of the shift they would make an attempt to vote at their regular polling station and be told that their name is not on the List.
“Secondly, the List created on the new boundaries has displaced a lot of persons. For example, anybody on the new List who was registered in Main Street Old Road now has ended up in Challengers. Those persons would have been accustomed to voting in Old Road and if they are not notified when they go to vote on Election Day, they would be told their name is not there… So those persons may very well leave there if not notified and think that their name is not on the List at all.
“The persons who are registered in Middle Island Project, which is behind the cemetery, they now end up in Old Road and they are accustomed to voting in Middle Island…”
Grant said approximately 200 individuals had been displaced and, regarding the issue he has with the List prepared in accordance with the old boundaries, his colleague from Constituency Number Eight, the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, expressed to him that he has a similar issue.
At the time when Grant spoke with this publication, he said a team had been assembled to take up these concerns with the Supervisor of Election, Wingrove George, but he was not certain if they were successful in locating him.
Grant alleged that recent events, including the issues with the Voters’ Lists, is part of a “conspiracy among the Labour Party, Denzil Douglas and the Electoral Office…It is a deliberate act to frustrate and hinder democracy in St. Kitts and to ensure a win for Denzil Douglas”.
“He cannot get a win unless he steals this Election and so he is trying all he can to steal the Election with the concurrence of the electoral office and the Supervisor of Elections. It is as clear and as simple as that,” Grant added.
