Charlestown Nevis (September 21, 2005) -- Less than a week after winning the St. Kitts Half Marathon, seasoned distance runner, Kittitian Otis Stevens, added another trophy to his growing collection with an empathic win of the inaugural Nevis 10K Run held on Heroes Day, Friday September 16.
Leading all the way from the start, Stevens crossed the finish line outside the Nevis Tourism Authority Building in Charlestowns Business District with a time of 39:34.47 minutes. 41.53 seconds behind him was Nevisian OBrian Huggins, who placed second overall. The 10K Run had started on the western end of Vance W. Amory International Airport in Newcastle.
Stevens, who is a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force sports club, told Government Information Service that he had had a successful season, having won the St. Kitts Half Marathon, which was held on Sunday September 11. I will be here to defend next year, he said.
Janill Williams of Pioneers of Antigua, who crossed the finish line in fifth position overall at 41:27.17 won the females categorys top award. Latoya Joseph of Roots Athletic Club, also from Antigua, who finished in ninth position overall at 44:18.68 was the second highest placed female.
123 competitors took part in the Nevis 10K Run, which was organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Nevis Island Administration, in conjunction with the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association. Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports in the Nevis Island Administration, Mr Laughton Brandy, told competitors at the end of the race that it would be an annual event.
Awards were given in age categories both for males and females. Under 20 Females, the first three winners were all from Antigua, Latoya Jones (44:18.68), Kenryca Francis and Lynda Blackett. In fourth and fifth positions were Makenda Challenger of Nevis and Rochelle James of St. Kitts.

OBrian Huggins of Nevis placed top in the Under 20 Males category. Others in order were Shirvon Greene (Nevis), Thynel Martin (Nevis), Tamarni Huggins (Nevis), OShane Thomas (Antigua), Timoy Henry (Overseas), Kleeton Hendrickson (Nevis), Shakeem Craunston (Overseas), Clayton Jeffers (Nevis) and Kejahrie Grante (Nevis).
Janill Williams took the top award in the Under 35 Females category. Others in order were Kelly Willard (St. Kitts), Miranda Grandison (Nevis), Niki Aurangabaka (St. Kitts), Lora Henry (Nevis), Gayle Jeffers (Nevis), Faith Henry (St. Kitts), Kristina Storey (Nevis), Karen Craunston (Nevis), and Sarah Petremears.
Otis Stevens took the top award in the Under 35 Males category. Others in order were James Weekes (Nevis), Carlie Clarke (Nevis), Nick Martin (Nevis), Jaime Moreno (Nevis), Carlos Chapman (Nevis), Stef Backman (St. Kitts), Joshua Mike (Nevis), Colin Walwyn (Nevis) and Kimbell Ward (Nevis).
Wendy Yaphe of St. Kitts at 50:05.71 was the highest placed in the Over 35 Females category. Others in order were Vernice Wattley (Nevis), Kristina Garmain (Overseas), Danielle Moreno (Nevis), Carolyn Kerr (St. Kitts), Lavern Williams (St. Kitts), Wendy Brear (Overseas), Monica Leader (Nevis), Angela Dore (Nevis) and Patricia Chambers (Nevis).

Placing first in the Over 35 Males category was Jesse Mulcaire of Nevis with a time of 43:09.23. Others in order were Earl David (Nevis), Andy Brear (Overseas), Rolstein Bartlette (St. Kitts), Chris Hellman (USA), Derrick Liburd (Nevis), Cameron Gill (Nevis), Cedric Duporte (Nevis), Gary Moise (St. Kitts) and Tatics Dore (Nevis).
Jhrvel Swanston, 9, was the youngest female finisher, while Tijauni Carey, 8, was the youngest male finisher. On the opposite side of the scale, Patricia Chamber, 55, was the oldest female finisher, while Bruce Tischer, 60, was the oldest person to cross the finish line.
