Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 23, 2015) – “It doesn’t matter, race, colour, creed or physical ability - if you are an Olympian, you are an Olympian. I think it is really important to recognize that. Every single person is special. Every person is unique, and we all have something to contribute, if we are given the right support.” These are the profound words of Digicel St Kitts and Nevis CEO, Johnny Ingle, in a statement to the Media during the Sponsorship Presentation to The Special Olympics Team. The brief cheque hand-over ceremony was held on Friday, February 20th at Digicel’s Port Zante Head Quarters.
On location to receive the $12,000 cheque donation was Ivor Blake, the National Director of Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis. In expressing gratitude for the generous and consistent sponsorship from Digicel, Blake informed the Telecomms Executives that the cash would assist the organization in preparing for the Summer World Games in Los Angeles and the National Games to be held this Wednesday, 25th February at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.
Chief Executive Officer Johnny Ingle also mentioned that Special Olympics has always been of interest to Digicel, and the company’s financial aid for 2015 was a tangible way of supporting the work of the organization. He believes that it is a “visible way to support those who, in society, sometimes tend to be forgotten”.
The call to action as stated by Ingle is for “everybody (to) support, support, support! A little goes a very long way, and if everybody contributes, we would ensure that our Special Olympics teams really get what they need and represent our Federation in style.”
The Special Olympics National Games in Track and Field events commence at 9:30am on February 25th at the Silver Jubilee Stadium, Bird Rock. Approximately 150 athletes from both islands will be competing as well as a Special Olympics Guest Team from Connecticut. Admission is open to the general public and is free of cost.
