GENDER AFFAIRS ENCOURAGES WOMEN TO “MAKE IT HAPPEN”

Etsu Bradshaw-Caines
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 06, 2015 (SKNIS): The theme selected for this year’s Gender Affairs Annual Breakfast and Award ceremony held in celebration of International Women’s Day is “Make It Happen.”

According to a press release from the Gender Affairs Department, March 8, which is the day on which women are recognized internationally, is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate women while focusing on their challenges and drive to overcome them as well as their positive contributions and accomplishments.

This year’s theme of “Make It Happen,” provides the scope to acknowledge “female pioneers and trailblazers who will be commended for their outstanding contributions in several fields.  These include the sectors of education, arts, health, manufacturing, construction, politics, community development, agriculture, nurturing of women and non-traditional skills.

Director of Gender Affairs Etsu Bradshaw-Caines explained the significance of the theme.

“We are awarding women who have made it happen,” Ms. Bradshaw emphasized.  “Many women have made it happen with the miracle of giving birth. Women are the vessel through which life begins and it does not end there, because in our society just over 51 percent of our households are headed by women.  Women therefore take care of the family economically and often socially as well, for they then are the ones who spend the most time with the children and so, have the chief responsibility of training them.  Women are also taking their place in non-traditional occupations such as construction and mechanics.  And many of us are now returning to school, sometimes as teen mothers after having put our personal ambitions on hold to care for our families.”

The Breakfast and Awards Ceremony takes place on Saturday, March 07, 2015 at 8 a.m. at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and tickets can be purchased from the Gender Affairs Department on Victoria Road.

The Department of Gender Affairs is inviting residents to play their part in making International Women’s Day a success by coming up with creative ways of highlighting women who “Make It Happen.”  One way of doing this is by posting pictures of women who are “Making It Happen” on social media.  The opportunity can also be taken to acknowledge and send greetings to women by as many means possible in the upcoming days.

Gender Affairs takes the opportunity to wish all women Happy International Women’s Day.
