18 March 2015 - The Ministry of Education and Culture is preparing to launch its Apprenticeship Programme as it works to assist the Territory’s unemployed youth with finding employment.

The six (6) month programme is for youth between the ages of 18 to 29 years and who have registered at the Youth Employment Services (YES).

During the Fourth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Second House of Assembly, Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn announced that the Ministry of Education and Culture apprenticeship programme to help young people find employment was about to be launched.

The Minister said, “The programme was created to bridge the gap. Through a coordinated effort involving business and industry, the programme will provide the Virgin Islands with a young, skilled and competitive workforce.”

Minister Walwyn added that his ministry believes that partnering with businesses to employ young people in the Territory will have tremendous benefits to the economy and the social development of the country.

Meanwhile, the apprenticeship programme will be launched with a Job Fair on Monday, March 30.  The fair will be held at Maria’s by the Sea parking lot from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Training for this programme will commence on March 23 to 25 and 27; from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Student Services conference room, located on the third floor in the Ward’s Building.

Young persons are encouraged to register at the Youth Employment Service (YES) on Main Street, next to the old Post Office building or telephone Mr. Albert Wheatley at 468- 0045 or 541-1981.

In 2012, the Ministry of Education established the Youth Employment Services to help young people find Employment. In 2014,  the Ministry in collaboration with YES executed two developmental workshops and a Job Expo  in Virgin Gorda to further give the young people opportunities to develop marketable skills and meet business to explore employment opportunities.

The Ministry of Education and Culture continues to address the concerns of the young people of the Territory who wish to be meaningfully engaged and contribute positively to the development of the Territory.
