Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 27th, 2005- The first annual Caribbean Youth Photography Contest has been launched by the National Geographic Traveler magazine in conjunction with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). The In My View competition invites Caribbean students aged 12-17 to submit photos that they believe capture the best attributes of their country.
The images should represent a variety of elements in Caribbean culture- the people, food, landscapes or local events that best describe the spirit of the community. Interested students on St. Kitts should enter up to five images to the Human Resource Department at the St. Kitts Tourism Authority no later than November 15th, 2005. Each photo entry must be colour or black-and-white prints or 35mm transparencies only. For prints, the original negative (or colour transparency or digital file) must be made available so that the winners pictures can be published. Photos shot with a digital camera and not manipulated are eligible. However a print must be submitted.
This is an exciting opportunity for children on St. Kitts, who are interested in photography, to be mentored by a National Geographic photographer. We all are aware of the spectacular photographs that the publication displays in its issues and therefore can imagine the impact winning this competition can have on a young enthusiast, said Corporate Communications Manager, Unoma Allen.
The grand-prize winner will receive a four-day, three-night trip for two (child and parent or guardian) to Washington, D.C., which will include a visit to National Geographic Society headquarters and a tour of the city with a National geographic photographer, plus a 35mm digital camera. In addition, the winning students photographs will be published in national geographic travelers May/June 2006 issue.
The second place winner will receive the ultimate photography package of a digital camera and carrying case, as well as three national Geographic Society books. The third place winner will receive 10 National Geographic Society photography books. A photo exhibit of some of the finalists work will be on display at select travel shows.
