Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 21, 2015 (SKNIS): Twenty-five persons in the People Employment Programme (PEP) awaiting job attachments were briefed on the rights of workers, work ethics and the responsibilities of employers and employees at a session with officials from the Department of Labour recently.

The discussion was part of an ongoing campaign designed to educate persons on their rights and responsibilities as outlined in the labour legislation. Labour Officer Jacqueline Chiverton-Pemberton was one of the officials that facilitated the session and described the audience as lively. They were drawn from the hospitality and cosmetology sections as well as the administrative office.

“The participation level was very, very high,” Mrs. Chiverton-Pemberton stated, adding that the persons at the session asked many questions. “They said that they were grateful for the opportunity to attend this forum because there is a lot of information that they did not know and now they have a better understanding on a number of issues.”

Requests were made for the labour officials to return for a follow up session and Ms. Chiverton-Pemberton promised that similar sessions will be held for PEP trainees and workers in St. Kitts and Nevis. Symposiums are also being planned for human resource managers continuing a process that began in 2014.

Workers rights, responsibilities and other relevant topics are also featured on the department’s weekly radio programme In the World of Work which airs original episodes on Mondays at 8:25 a.m. and a rebroadcast on Thursday at the same time.
