ROC aid teams, relief supplies arrive in Nepal

An earthquake-ravaged area in Nepal
ROC Foreign Press Liaison Office Press Release

Three emergency assistance teams from the ROC reached Nepal April 28 and 29, immediately launching earthquake relief assessment and aid operations.

ROC Representative to India Tien Chung-kwang, who is coordinating Taiwan’s relief efforts in Kathmandu, conferred with a 15-member team from the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation including four doctors, which arrived April 28 with 1.3 tons of medical and other emergency supplies.

A Taiwan International Health Action team with six medical specialists, led by a Ministry of Health and Welfare official and accompanied by two Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials familiar with the situation in Nepal, landed April 29. TaiwanIHA oversees ROC emergency humanitarian medical aid.

A composite group from the International Headquarters Search and Rescue, Taiwan; Buddha’s Light International Association ROC; the Red Cross Society of the ROC; and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital also arrived the same day, with five tons of relief supplies to follow shortly, including medicines, tents, blankets, and dried food.

Upon arrival in Nepal, members of the three teams promptly joined in quake relief efforts.

Representative Tien and other officials are assisting ROC citizens in Nepal, coordinating aid logistics, and maintaining close contact with relevant Nepali agencies. As of 6:30 p.m. April 29, 279 of the 284 Taiwanese in Nepal at the time of the quake had been reported safe. MOFA is using every available channel in attempts to contact those still unaccounted for.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India remains in close communication with the Nepali embassy in India to provide further relief assistance as needed.

While Taiwan’s relief efforts have been hampered by the lack of direct flights to Nepal and an air traffic overload at airports there, the government and private sector are working together closely to provide all possible aid. The ROC government announced a donation of US$300,000 soon after the 7.9-magnitude temblor devastated Nepal April 25.
