B.V.I. Monday, April 6 – Finance Cadet Mr. Jeremy Vanterpool who recently completed the Ministry of Finance’s cadet programme, has described it as informative, insightful and crucial.

During a six-month rotation period Mr. Vanterpool worked in the departments of Inland Revenue, Her Majesty’s Customs, and Information Technology and the Post Office, all of which fall under the ministry’s portfolio.

Mr. Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations during a Government Information Service radio report that the programme is designed to enrich the participant’s knowledge of the purpose and business of the ministry.  “The experience has been very good and I have been able to get a lot of insight on things of which I was unaware,” he said.

He said each department offered something that interested him. “Having seen how these different departments connect with the Ministry of Finance I have a greater understanding of the ministry’s work on a whole, which helps me in making informed decisions and to know the reason why certain things are done,” Mr. Vanterpool added.

He further stated that “in order to be effective in what we do we have to know the culture of our organisation so that we can make meaningful contributions, which can help in taking the organisation forward into the future.”

After each rotation, the cadet is required to report to the Financial Secretary and heads of departments on the observations, challenges, suggestions and possible solutions to challenges within the department.

At the end of the rotation, the cadets should have attained a much better understanding of how the departments connect with the ministry, helping them to think more objectively and to be in the position to make informed decisions.

The Ministry of Finance is primarily responsible for developing and implementing Government’s overall economic and fiscal strategy. Its vision is to provide effective financial management through timely and comprehensive financial and economic analysis.
