10-year-old charged with murder

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 10-year-old boy who is believed to have stabbed another to death, was yesterday officially slapped with one of the highest criminal charges in the land, murder.

The juvenile is accused of committing the Friday, April 3, 2009 offence which took place at Maynard’s Park in Cayon.

Information received by SKNVibes indicates that the victim, 14-year-old Bejay Dore of Warner Street, Cayon, and the accused were at Maynard’s Park when there was a dispute over a ball. The accused, the information further states, went to his grandmother’s house, returned to the Park with a knife and stabbed Dore in his neck.

The wounded Dore ran from the Park onto Warner’s Road and into the yard where his house sits.  He, according to a police report, “was pronounced dead in the yard where he resided by the District Medical Doctor Dr. Garfield Alexander”.

SKNVibes understands that following the incident, the alleged assailant was taken to the Cayon Police Station where he was arrested and kept in custody.

Having been officially charged, the youngster will participate in a process in which many Kittitians and Nevisians his age and older, have never been involved. He will stand before the Magistrate’s Court where decisions will be made on what will become of him before trial.

Bejay’s father, Bertie Dore, spoke exclusively with SKNVibes following the incident and he described his lost son as a jovial child who always brought smiles to the faces of his friends and loved ones.

He said this is a particularly trying time for his family, nonetheless, he is doing all is his power to keep the family together.

The unprecedented incident has sparked much debate among the local, regional and international communities and each seems to end with more unanswered questions.
