OAS, May, 8th, 2015 -- The Organization of American States has begun the deployment of an Electoral Observation Mission (OAS/EOM) to observe the general elections in Suriname on May 25, 2015.
The delegation, headed by the Chilean economist and former Director of the Department of International Affairs of the OAS, Irene Klinger, who was designated by Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, is comprised by 24 experts and observers of 13 nationalities (Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Guatemala, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Spain, and the United States). The first members of the Mission arrived in Suriname on May 17.
The Mission will observe the election and analyze aspects regarding electoral organization, constituency boundaries, electoral technology, political financing and the equal participation of men and women in the electoral process.
In the days leading up to the election, the OAS/EOM will meet with electoral authorities, representatives of political parties, government officials, as well as members of the media and civil society organizations to learn about the preparations of the electoral process. On election day, members of the Mission will visit polling stations across the country to observe the various stages of the process from the opening of the polls to the counting, tabulation and dissemination of the results.
This is the fifth time the OAS has observed elections in Suriname since 1991. The day after the election, the OAS/EOM will present its preliminary findings in a press conference and will subsequently present a report to the Permanent Council of the Organization in Washington, DC.
The Chief of Mission, Irene Klinger, who will arrive in Suriname on Tuesday, is the only person authorized to make public statements on behalf of the Mission.
