May 22nd, 2015 -- For the past 19 years, residents of the Green Valley community have contributed solidly to the growth and success of the Green Valley Festival.
This community festival has been a platform from which the culture and spirit of the people from Canada Estate, Keys, Cayon, and Ottleys village has been celebrated. This unique collaboration of residents cannot be taken for granted. The festival has had a long standing tradition of bringing villagers together and there has been a great spirit that hinges on community outreach and good times.
On Sunday May 17, 2015, the community's seniors were treated to a hearty and delicious Sunday meal at the Bethesda Moravian School room. The seniors enjoyed an assortment of rice and peas, macaroni pie, a variety of vegetables, mutton and chicken, as well as tasty desserts, wine and apple cider. Several seniors gladly helped themselves to a second serving. Dozens more who could not attend because of various ailments received their meal on wheels, specially delivered by faithful community volunteers.
The spirit of community was alive on Sunday as seniors who paved the way for our communities to thrive were celebrated for their stellar contributions. They were clearly overjoyed to be in attendance and had a wonderful time in fellowship with each other.
Many of the seniors attending Sunday's luncheon were repeat guests, including the vibrant 101 year old Mrs. Louise Isaac, who continues to shine in her golden years, as well as former Principal Mr. Leroy Pemberton, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
Some new faces graced the halls of the Bethesda Moravian School Room but sadly, several customary faces were clearly missing. In the past year, the community has lost some of its treasured stalwarts. We are happy they were able to fellowship at previous luncheons held in their honor, and we pray their departed souls are at peace.
The seniors of our community today were our teachers, nurses, doctors, sugar cane and factory workers, bankers, construction workers, community organizers and leaders of yesterday. We thank all of our seniors who did their part to make our community a prosperous one. They are part of the cycle of life and we must vow never to neglect them.
Green Valley Global extends a heartfelt thanks to our seniors for giving us countless reasons to celebrate them and we trust they continue to enjoy their golden years and truly smell the roses while they have the gift of life.
A special thanks is extended to all the volunteers from the various churches who helped to make Sunday's Seniors luncheon a success, including former GVFC Chair Mr. Douglas Wattley, the pastor and members of the Bethesda Moravian Church, and other faithful servants who effortlessly continue to place community and country above themselves.
Each year for the past five years, members of Green Valley Global solicits the financial support of nationals and non-nationals in the Diaspora to make the seniors luncheon a reality. They anticipate a bigger celebration of our seniors next year when the community celebrates 20 years of the festival.
Thanks to all who made Sunday's luncheon a success!
The Green Valley Festival heats up this weekend with a beauty pageant on Friday night and weekend activities for all ages, culminating with J'Ouvert and a street parade on Whit Monday, May 25, 2015.
