BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EARLY detection as well as quick response by the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services Department prevented a fire, which originated at the Basseterre Church of God on Durant Avenue, from spreading to catastrophic proportions.
The fire occurred yesterday (May 27) and according to Fire Chief Everette O’Garro a unit responded to a report sometime after 8:00 a.m., and on arrival on the scene it discovered that smoke was coming from the bottom floor of the two-storey concrete building.
A closer look revealed that the fire was contained in a room that was once used as a kitchen.
He said the team was able to extinguish the fire before it has a chance to spread beyond the walls of that room.
Fire Chief O’Garro explained that, according to preliminary reports, the fire was electrical in nature and originated from a refrigerator housed in the said room.
The refrigerator was totally destroyed, but thankfully the heat and smoke damage caused to the rest of the room and items in proximity to the appliance were minor.
