Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 01, 2015 (SKNIS): In a scene reminiscent of a village jouvert, over 100 persons throughout communities across St. Kitts took to the island’s main road on Saturday (May 30) for a fitness walk from Belle Vue to Ottley’s led by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.
The health walk was a community initiative encouraged by the Prime Minister to promote active lifestyles amongst his neighbours in the area. Commencing at 5:30 a.m, the walkers gathered and made their way along the route.
“The root cause of many of the non-communicable diseases in St. Kitts and Nevis like hypertension and diabetes can be attributed to poor diet and lack of physical activity and the walk was designed to promote being more active and will become a regular event in the area ” said Prime Minister Harris.
Commenting on the turnout, Prime Minister Harris said, “it was good to see so many people out at 5:30 a.m. Some were jogging, some were walking, we had husbands and wives, grandparents, children, we had entire families.” He further added, “the prosperity of our nation rests on the health of our people and we will continue this effort to ensure that our people can contribute and benefit from our prosperity.”
The walk, which ended at Ottley’s, saw many of the participants socializing and engaging in board games into the mid-morning.
