BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN their continuing quest to improve on the current relationship that exists between the police and the general public in St. Kitts, members of the Cayon community were taken on a conducted tour of the recently-acquired Mobile Command Centre.

The event took place on the Island’s Main Road in the vicinity of Paulette’s Shop in Upper Cayon between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.

Many residents, including children, were in attendance and took time out to be photographed with officers of the Cayon Police Station.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Officer-in-Charge of the Cayon Police Station, Sergeant Carl Greaux said the initiative was in keeping with the High Command’s strategy of Community Policing in an effort to reduce crime in that district.

“As part of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Community Policing drive, the High Command had authorised the opening of the doors of the Mobile Command Centre to members of this district, with the aim of sensitising them on its role.

“Not only were the dozens of community members given a conducted tour of the police station on wheels and an explanation of the function of the various equipment within, but also to assure them that their safety is high on the police’s agenda,” Greaux said.

Greaux pointed out that while he and other officers were interacting with the visitors, they took the opportunity to explain to them the importance of Community Policing and were assured of their cooperation in the fight against crime.

One community member told this publication that she was pleased with the efforts the officers are making in Cayon in the fight against crime.

“I must commend the police for their efforts made so far in this community in their fight against crime. The tour that they gave us today was both enlightening and educational, in the sense that we now know about the capabilities of the Mobile Command Centre.

“In recent times this community has been plagued with gun violence and house breaking. Many of the residents do know who commit these crimes but remain silent. However, with the employment of their Community Policing strategy, I can assure you that they will have my support and that of many others in this community.”

Sergeant Greaux explained that the Mobile Command Centre would be visiting all communities on the island.

He also explained that whenever the Centre is operating within a given area, there would be a number of orange cones around it and no one should breach the outer perimeter, unless they would have been making a report or on official business.

Greaux noted that the Centre was fitted with a telephone system, flat screen monitors and a command room, among other features.

The Mobile Command Centre arrived in the Federation late last year and was acquired through the 10th European Development Fund Safety and Security Improvement Programme.
