BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SEPP BLATTER has stepped down as President of FIFA in the wake of a corruption scandal just four days after he was elected to serve a fifth term in that position.

The news broke just before 1:00 p.m. today (June 2) when Blatter made an announcement at a press conference at FIFA Headquarters in Switzerland.

In making the statement, Blatter indicated that he had called for an extraordinary FIFA Congress as soon as possible to elect a new president.

“I will organise extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president. I will not stand. I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. For many years we have called for reforms, but these are not sufficient.”

Though no major reason was given for his resignation, Blatter expressed his love for FIFA and said that was the rationale for him stepping down.

“FIFA’s interest are dear to me. That’s why I have taken this decision. What counts most for me is the institution of FIFA and football around the world.”

Blatter had been associated with FIFA since 1975 and had served as President since 1998.

Last week, nine former and  current members of FIFA were arrested for 47 counts of fraud that occurred over the last 24 years.

Two Caribbean natives, President of CONCACAF Jeffrey Webbe and former President Jack Warner  were among those indicted on charges ranging from bribery, racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering.
