Asim Martin says no one can serve East Basseterre like he has...

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PARLIAMENTARY Representative of Constituency One Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin told an eager and curious crowd of people that no one would have been able to serve the residents of East Basseterre as he has done during his three-term tenure.

Minister Martin was at the time addressing members of his constituency at the Labour Party’s town hall meeting held last night (Apr. 7) at the Washington Archibald High School.

He was accompanied by Prime Minister and Leader of the Ruling Labour Party Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, and together they fielded questions from the constituents on a variety of topics ranging from land and infrastructure to sports and healthcare.

In his address to the crowd, Martin expressed his confidence and pride in the work he had done for the Constituency throughout his tenure as its representative. In particular, he noted that housing and infrastructure were areas in which rapid development had occurred during the past 14 years.

“Communities such as Ponds Extension and Taylors Housing, and Bird Rock and Frigate Bay have all undergone massive changes during my watch. And where houses were built, the government ensured that roads and infrastructure were put in place to aid these places. That is because we firmly believe in development and prosperity for all.

“We have not been a perfect government. But I am confident the good we have done outweighs any mistakes we have made. I can proudly say that no one would have been able to do what I have done for East Basseterre during my three terms as the Parliamentary Representative,” Martin declared.

With general elections looming, the Labour Party has stepped up its campaign in recent months. So far, in 2009, town hall meetings have also been held in the villages of St. Paul’s, Old Road, Conaree and McKnight.

Speaking exclusively to SKNVibes, Dr. Douglas said he was convinced that these meetings were a good idea.

“I am fortified in my mind that this is a good idea. Government services have to be efficient, available and must be improved wherever there is room to do so. Using the community as a barometer to test whether these can be achieved is what we are attempting to identify from the town hall meetings,” he explained.
