BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RAM’S Village Superstars have dethroned Sol Island Auto Conaree as Street Football King after defeating them in the Final of that competition last evening (June 3) at the Pam Tyson Netball Complex in Warner Park.
After three weeks of exciting street football action, the curtains came down on the St. Kitts leg of the 2015 Guinness Street Football Competition with Ram’s Village Superstars being crowned champions and will represent St. Kitts later this month at the Caribbean Tournament to be held in Jamaica.
Last night the top four teams from the round robin stage of the tournament battled to decide which one would capture the title.
The first match saw Village Superstars battling against Winners Circle Newtown United. However, despite Newtown finding the back of the net in the match, the West Basseterre team fought back and eventually marched into the Final 4-1.
In the other Semi-Final match, Sol Island Auto Conaree, which won the Tournament since its inception, put in a dominant performance to secure the other Final spot with a 3-1 victory.
The eagerly anticipated Final was played in front of a packed arena that was divided in support of either side.
When the game kicked off, Conaree looked the aggressors but were pegged back when Village manufactured a superb display of street football that was capped off by a brilliant finish to take an early lead.
Conaree however fought gallantly to bring the game back on terms, but before half time Village made it 2-1.
It the second half, Village adopted a more defensive approach and chocked Conaree’s attempts in trying to level the game, which led to the players becoming frustrated.
On the blast of the final whistle, the Ram’s Village Superstars players celebrated with some of their fans.
Following the victory, captain of Ram’s Village Superstars Stephen Clarke congratulated his teammates.
"This is a great achievement for us winning this and now going out and representing our country. This is something we set out for and really wanted," Clarke said.
He also spoke about preparation before defeating Conaree.
"There wasn't much preparation! The guys know how to play small goal very well, so we did not need much preparation."
He commented on his team's confidence heading into the regional tournament.
"We still have some work to do but we are confident we can go out there and represent our country well."
Clarke also indicated that they have to work on their defence and movements ahead of the tournament.
