Evangelical Association calls for ban on Charlie Charlie

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Evangelical Association has asked that the Ministry of Education impose a ban on the ‘Charlie Charlie’ challenge from the schools of the Federation.

President of the Evangelical Association Bishop Ron Collins, who is also a counselor at the Basseterre High School, indicated in an exclusive interview with SKNVibes that the religious body received reports of instances of the game being played.

He noted however that although information coming from other Caribbean countries points to manifestations that are paranormal and supernatural in nature, reports of such have not been received regarding St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We convened a forum without our pastors, executives and youth leaders on Saturday. We were being pressed by a number of pastors who felt there was an urgent need for us to review and look at what reports they have had and what concerns and their own experiences with the Charlie Charlie challenge. And so having concerned, at the meeting we looked at the evidence that we have, the research that we have in the region and abroad in terms of the game itself.

“And we realise that the Charlie Charlie is a regimental form of an Ouija Board used to summon a Mexican demon called Charlie. And we felt that it is inappropriate for children. There have been a number of concerns raised as to what has been done. We have not been able to confirm any supernatural events. But we, in connection with other of our colleagues in the region, have learnt that there have been activities related to the supernatural. There have been concerns, particularly the psychological impact on the children, and this is our main area of concern…”

He stressed that the possible psychological ramifications of taking the Charlie Charlie Challenge constitute enough grounds for the Evangelical Association to ask that the game be banned.

“These young minds are impressionable and some of them can be easily influenced, and so the Charlie Charlie challenge is not an appropriate game. So, while we have not been presented with any evidence of any demon possession or any paranormal behaviour in St. Kitts, we have had those reports from our colleagues through the region. We believe that the activity itself does have a negative impact on the psychological development of our children!”

Bishop Collins informed that the Evangelical Association has written to the Federal Minister of Education, the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs, Permanent Secretary and Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education outlining its thoughts on the issue, advising of consequences and asking that the game be banned.

He said a response is being awaited.

Thus far, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda and St. Lucia have banned the game from their schools, while in other territories, including Trinidad and Tobago, strong warnings have been issued to students to refrain from engaging in the activity.

Collins expressed his view that the Charlie Charlie game is only “a fraction of the problem” and that there are other problems, including dysfunction in families, crime and violence, pornography and lack of guidance for children, which need to be addressed.
