BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SIX individuals, who survived the April 6, 2015 traffic accident that claimed the life of another, have received financial assistance from the United Villages of West Farm Boyds and Palmetto Point in settling the medical expenses accrued.
The incident occurred sometime after 7:00 p.m. when a motor pickup truck was travelling westward along Johnson Long Path. When the vehicle got in the vicinity of the University of Medical and Health Services, it encountered difficulty and overturned before colliding with a tree.
A police press release had indicated that 12 individuals were aboard the vehicle at the time of impact, all of whom were reportedly transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital.
In an interview with SKNVibes, Public Relations Officer of the United Villages of West Farm Boyds and Palmetto Point Verlyn Warner explained that upon learning of the incident, she sought to devise a plan of assistance for those less fortunate victims of the crash. And after conceptualising a plan, she consulted the group.
“When I heard about the accident, immediately I started thinking that these are children of poor people and I began asking what could my group do to assist, and the idea of helping with some of their hospital bills came to mind. So I took it to my group and they were onboard with it.”
She said the next step was to organise a take-away dinner which involved soliciting the assistance of others in donating dishes for the event. That event was held at the Bronte Welsh Primary School.
After funds were collected and counted from the fundraising event, Warner informed that little more than $3 500 was raised and it was used to pay a percentage of the hospital bills for six of the individuals involved in the traffic accident.
A Thanksgiving Service will be held tomorrow evening (June 5) for the victims of the crash and, as explained by Warner, the receipts carrying the information of amount paid and balance owed would be presented to them.
Warner said the beneficiaries of the assistance are Javin Dias, Alvis Dias, Ojani Dunrod, Rejon Hanley, Clyde Herbert and Shavin Hanley who range in age from early teens to 20s.
The Thanksgiving Service will be held at the Boyds Basketball Court from 7:00 p.m.
