BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC) has lent its financial support in the development of St. Kitts and Nevis. This time, however, it is for the funding of the renovation of Government Headquarters on Church Street, Basseterre.

At a simple ceremony held at Government Headquarters on Saturday last (Jun. 6), Resident Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou, on behalf of the Government and people of Taiwan, presented a cheque to Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris to fund the renovation project.

Dr. Harris informed that the building which houses Government Headquarters is in need of a face-lift and noted that “it is good that at this time that we are able to procure the resources which we shall put to good use in renovating property inside and outside and adding other things that enhance the value of this property”.

He expressed his gratitude to the Taiwanese Ambassador for the gesture and reflected on the bond between the two countries.

“I want to thank His Excellency, the distinguished Ambassador of the Republic of China, Taiwan, for being here today to again demonstrate the strong bonds of friendship that we have enjoyed both as a Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis with the Government and people of Taiwan.”

Ambassador Chiou also spoke to the strong bonds of friendship that exist between the people and Governments of the two countries, and noted some of the developmental projects in which the ROC was involved with the twin-island Federation.

“We have done similar jobs in agriculture, tourism, solar energy and also IT training and we are looking forward to doing more jobs and more cooperation projects with the Prime Minister and your Government.”

Since establishing diplomatic ties on October 9, 1983, these two countries have been working closely together in international affairs. And over the years, St. Kitts and Nevis has been known to be one of Taiwan’s firmest allies in the Caribbean and had offered its full support for that country’s bid to gain United Nations and World Health Organisation membership.
