June 15th, 2015 -- On Saturday, June 13, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Denton program, delivered a humanitarian assistance shipment to St. Kitts and Nevis valued at USD$31,000.

Community Bikes, a not-for-profit organization based in Hamilton, New York, donated the shipment that included bicycles and helmets for use by the St. Kitts Ministry of Youth’s “Cycle through Success” program.  This program provides access to bicycles as an incentive for at-risk youth to meet specific goals in areas that include academic achievement, personal responsibility, anger management, and conflict resolution.

This shipment also contained hospital supplies and equipment, school supplies, and musical instruments.  The recipients of the shipment included the Ministry of Youth, the Joseph N. France General Hospital, the William Connor Primary School, and the Cotton Thomas School for Special Needs students.

Mission Director of USAID Eastern and Southern Caribbean Christopher Cushing commented, “The handover of this USD$31,000 humanitarian shipment highlights the commitment, dedication, and goodwill of several agencies and individuals from the United States Government, as well as the government of St. Kitts and Nevis. I also want to thank our dedicated Air Force officers, who ensured that the goods were transported safely and on time.”

This shipment was facilitated through the Denton program which is jointly administered by USAID, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Department of Defense.  The Denton program allows donors to use space available on U.S. military cargo planes to transport humanitarian goods and equipment to countries in need.
