June 18th, 2015  --  The Caribbean needs to provide affordable and wider access to digital services, while taking advantage of the opportunities created by technological convergence and mobile technologies.

As part of its continued support of these and other Caribbean priorities within the objectives of the eLAC 2018 Digital Agenda, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters for the Caribbean has outlined several objectives which will encourage broader input from the region.

Representatives of Caribbean countries have been invited to an informational webinar, which takes place from 10 am on Thursday 18 June 2015, at the ECLAC Caribbean office in Trinidad and Tobago. This meeting will inform Caribbean governments on the details of the proposed eLAC Digital Agenda, which was first considered at a Preparatory Meeting held in San Jose, Costa Rica in November 2014.

eLAC 2018 will coordinate the implementation of programmes to support the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in achieving social and economic development goals for Latin America in the Caribbean during the 2015-2018 timeframe. The objectives outlined address the topics of access and infrastructure, digital economy, e-Government, social inclusion and sustainable development, and governance.

The conceptual framework for this programme of work will in turn serve as an input to the global process of preparing a new agreement in the framework of the World Summit of the Information Society (WSIS), which has been scheduled by the United Nations General Assembly for late 2015.

This webinar is being held in advance of the Fifth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society and Latin America in the Caribbean, to be held Mexico City from 5th to 7th August 2015, when it is expected that the eLAC 2018 Digital Agenda will be adopted.
