June, 25th, 2015 -- Dane Sandiford, President , Nevis Archery Association on Monday said the team’s participation at the just ended Southern Caribbean Archery Championship held in Trinidad from June 4th to June 8th, 2015 has given the archers a renewed vision.
“It was a great experience. It was a learning experience. Our objective was met. Participating in an overseas tournament renewed our vision to take the sport to higher heights,” Sandiford said. The competition was held at the Michael P.Mackenzie Archery range in Chaguaramus.
Sandiford spoke of the way forward for Nevis archery: “We will recruit young people of ages 12 to 16. We will also introduce archery to the hotel circuit.”
In April 2014, the Nevis team participated for the first time in the Southern Caribbean Archery Championship held in Guadeloupe.
Edmund Blackett a new comer in the archery sport, participated in an overseas archery tournament for the first time. He said being at the tournament gave him an Olympic feeling. “I felt like I was part of an olympic sport. In three days, I learnt what I would probably learn in three months. Everybody was friendly and giving new comers tips.”
He said in an interview that archery helps him to be focused and patient, “you have to be calm first before you shoot.”
Pam Barry, the founder of the Nevis Archery Association described the experience in Trinidad as “wonderful”. She is hopeful that the Nevis team will participate in the regional championship scheduled to be held in March 2016 in Barbados. Ms Barry said Nevis team was singled out as the best dressed in the tournament.
