Taiwan Today (9th July 2015) - A multimedia exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the ROC’s victory in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) is underway at National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei City.

Jointly organized by the Ministries of Culture and National Defense, “Memorable Eternity: The War of Resistance” pays tribute to the 3.22 million government personnel wounded or killed during the eight-year conflict, as we all the 20 million-plus civilians who lost their lives.

During the event’s opening ceremony, President Ma Ying-jeou said the exhibition reaffirms the undeniable fact that the ROC government led China’s war of resistance against Japan while making an invaluable contribution to the Allied victory in World War II.

“The ROC armed forces fought bravely in the conflict, engaging in 39,000 battles against a highly trained and well-equipped foe,” he said, adding that the exhibition also helps the public better appreciate the ruthlessness of war and value of peace.

According to the MND, the event underscores the significance of the war in the ROC history and the retrocession of Taiwan afterwards. “Mistakes can be forgiven, but the truth cannot be forgotten,” MND spokesman Lo Shao-ho said.

“The war was won by the ROC armed forces under the command of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek,” Lo said. “The exhibition celebrates the beginning of peace and the end of confrontation.”

Running until June 24, 2016, the event features historical documents and photographs provided by Academia Historica, Armed Forces Museum and Central News Agency, as well as a giant 3-D topographical map of the ROC.

Also on display are 24 paintings depicting the most memorable events during the war. These include the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 7, 1937, which signaled the launch of full-scale Japanese aggression; the Cairo Conference in 1943; and the Japanese surrender two years later in Nanjing.
