Airlift between the Virgin Islands and St. Kitts and Nevis a concern

By: Erasmus Williams, CUOPM

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, APRIL 15TH 2009 (CUOPM) – The difficulty in getting to St. Kitts and Nevis from the British Virgin Islands and the United States Virgin Islands has been raised by a national residing in Virgin Gorda.

A male caller from Virgin Gorda to “Ask the Prime Minister,” complained that he had just returned to St. Kitts and expressed how difficult it was get to St. Kitts and return to the British Virgin Islands.

For several months, nationals have been complaining that when travelling on LIAT to St. Kitts from St. Croix and St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands and from Beef Island, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, LIAT bypasses St. Kitts and takes them to Antigua before they reach their final destination, sometimes resulting in delays or even cancellation of flights.

“We do not have enough flights between the Virgin Islands and St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Dr. Douglas.

“People have complained that they have to go ‘all around the world’ in order to get from St. Thomas and Tortola to get to St. Kitts. I myself have experienced it a few weeks ago. It is something that we have been talking to the authorities about and it is something that I believe in time we should be able to correct,” said Prime Minister Douglas to the caller.
