Taiwan Today, 27th July 2015 - Freedom and human rights are cherished in the ROC, with the nation’s successful experiences in promoting and protecting these values serving as an example for other countries and territories moving toward democracy, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lin July 23.
“Taiwan shares the same core values with members of the global community, as evidenced by the government’s ratification of two international covenants safeguarding civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights,” Lin said.
“The government spares no effort in promoting political participation by women, a fact illustrated by female candidates representing the ruling and opposition parties contesting the 2016 ROC presidential election.”
Lin made the remarks during an address at the Day of Dialogue during the Ministerial Conference organized by the Community of Democracies held July 22-24 in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.
According to the minister, as democracy continues to develop in Taiwan, the country’s nongovernmental organizations are assuming the role of humanitarian aid providers on the global front. “This is evidenced by Taiwan’s generous donations to disaster-stricken Haiti, Japan and Nepal during their hours of need,” he said.
“These actions helped promote greater participation by the people of Taiwan in political and public affairs, contributing to social stability that attracted foreign investment and boosted the local economy.”
The day before the conference, Lin met with El Salvador President Salvador Sanchez Ceren and discussed the current state of bilateral ties. Lin was in country on a four-day visit aimed at bolstering relations between the diplomatic allies.
Ceren stated his appreciation for ROC assistance developing the Central American country’s agriculture, economy, education and information communications technology. He also pledged to continue supporting the ROC’s bid for expanded participation in international activities.
Other key meetings on the minister’s agenda included face time with Victoria Marian Velasquez de Aviles, secretary-general of Central American Integration System (SICA). The ROC is an extra regional observer in the initiative serving as a framework for realizing the integration of Central America.
Lin and a delegation drawn largely from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are expected to touch down July 27 at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. (SFC-JSM)
